Thank you to those who were able to attend the Sound Studies Section (SSS) business meeting at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Society of Ethnomusicology, as well as our “Sound Studies in the Curriculum” workshop. It was wonderful to (virtually) see so many familiar and new faces!
Continuing what we discussed in the business meeting, we are currently inviting members to join one of our many committees. Information about each committee is below. Please express your interest in joining a committee through this form.
Please express your interest by Sunday, December 22, 2024 (extended deadline). And feel free to encourage other colleagues who are not-yet affiliated with the section to join in!
If you have any questions, feel free to email section co-chairs, Winnie W. C. Lai (Wan.Chi.Winnie.Lai@dartmouth.edu) or Cody Black (cody.black@duke.edu). These are great opportunities to add service to your CV.
Sincerely,
Sound Studies Section Executive Committee

Members of the curatorial committee will work with the SEM local arrangements committee (for in person events) or with the Communications committee (for virtual events) to secure a venue. Members will work to develop a theme for SoundingBoard, circulate calls for submissions, and select pieces.
The committee will meet at least quarterly with more frequent meetings held leading up to the event.

Members of the Prize committee will review submissions for the Student Prize
We envision that much of the work will happen between November and January and the committee will meet 1-3 times.

Members of the committee will meet to review submissions and provide feedback for sponsorship at the SEM panel before the sponsored panel deadline.
The committee will meet 1-2 times in January-February.
Communications Committee
Each member of the committee takes on responsibility for posting on one platform (FB, listserv, website). Posts will be vetted by other members of the committee (through email).
The committee will meet at least once per quarter but will be in frequent contact through email.
Tech Czar
Regularly maintains the SEM Sound Studies Section website (via Wix), Instagram and Facebook accounts.
Coordinates media content with the Communications Chair and attends meetings with the Communications Committee.
Attends to other public- and private-facing technological matters as they arise.
Due to the complicated nature of technological handover, this position is considered indefinite until the Tech Czar chooses to end their term.
